You walk into the Dalston Oxfam Shop. The bin of tapes lies before you with the slightly dank smell of worn clothing wafting from the racks nearby. Stale dust from countless little corners of homes where the owners' cigarettes and crisp crumbs linger in the plastic cases. Then you see a faded colored photocopied cassette cover which says "Acieed!" and some dodgy graphics and you know that someone has lovingly left you one of their personal comp tapes.
This is not really acid but more like early house. No doubt the makers of the tape wanted to reference the famous D-Mob track We Call it Acieed.

ReplyDeleteI recognise many of the tracks from various mixtapes done by mates, all from 1991 I think, possibly '92. Unfortunately I don't know the names of the tracks though...
I'd agree that this isn't Acid, but I guess Acieed! is arguably different, and could be used as a generic term for rave music circa 1988-1990 - even "We Call it Acieed" didn't have the characteristic 303 squidge in it as far as I remember.
Still though, the tracks on here sound a bit later than the Acieed! era to me.
I'm especially *loving* the track that kicks in about 8 minutes into side B :o) and apparently the DJ did too as it keeps resurfacing in the mix for ages!
The track at 12.58 is Shaft - Roobarb & Custard (an homage to a type of red & yellow ecstacy capsule doing the rounds in clubs at the time).
One track is a pretty poor start to a tracklisting I'm afraid, but a start nevertheless...

ReplyDeleteHere's a spot for you. about 15 minutes into side a you get some kind of permutation of D.O.P.'s Groovy Beat from Guerilla Records in 1992. A classic from the early Sasha days. It doesn't have the 'rockin to the rhythm of a groovy beat' vocal, so it's probably a bootleg.

ReplyDeleteOk – so this stuff is definitely NOT acid house, but I also wouldn’t put the tracks here in the same category as stuff like D Mob (who, along with groups like S’Express and Bomb the Bass were late 80’s “Aciiid” cash in artists). I’ve only listened to side one, but based on that I’d call this stuff “proto” deep house from the ’91 – ’93 era. If you like this kind of stuff, check out some of the Nervous Records comps from that era (there are a couple of tracks that I recognized right away as Nervous). This sound represents the first real split that occurred in “post” acid house\rave clubland. A lot of the older clubbers (who had been through the original rave and acid scenes) went “deep” and preferred this kind of stuff, while the younger “newbie’s” gravitated more towards hardcore, which was going on concurrently. At least this was the case where I was at the time, early ‘90’s San Francisco. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents…

ReplyDeleteOK, I know this post is from ages ago but I've just stumbled upon it and thought I'd contribute. This is definitely not Acieed. This stuff is just plain old house music from about 1990, or at least side A is. Acieed was just a catch-all phrase from 1989 that lasted for about 5 minutes and then morphed into something else. As for the tracks, I recognize a couple on there. The track right before Rave Generator is one of the Kevin Saunderson side projects, either Tronikhouse or E-Dancer (can't remember which but I'm leaning toward E-Dancer). I've got it on vinyl and will have to dig it out when I visit my parents. The track before that one sounds like one of the Todd Terry side projects, but I can't remember which one. I'm pretty sure its on Strictly Rhythm. And I'm hearing parts of 808 State in the mix as well but it could have been sampled into another song. You know how they were with sampling in those days ;)

Side B is much more rave and screams 1991 out to me. I recognize a couple of the tracks but have no idea what they are. I do remember when they were though.
