Rave Tapes - Dj Randall 1991-1992

Proper RAVE!! Not new rave, not new electro sampling rave. This is proper real old school rave. The promising art star Matthew Stone, part of the art collective Wowow, rescued a bunch of private rave tapes made between 91-95 from a thrift store dump and gave them to me. So upcoming will be the ones I like. Some Mickey Finn, some other weird stuff.

When I first posted this, I did not know much about this cassette. But the lovely Kevin from dilate choonz blog enlightened me on Dj Randall and this cassette. Turns out this is the cassette, "Yaman Studio Mix 2", made in 1992. Apparently DJ Randall is more of a drum and bass dj now. Here's the track listing and cover.

Side A

01 ??
02 Bass Balistics - Fantasy
03 Hedgehog Affair - Parameters
04 Krispy Krouton - Beef & Tomato
05 Bodysnatch - Hey I Cant Explain It
06 Skeleton Krew - Luv To Luv Ya
07 Doc Scott - NHS ( Heavyweight Remix)
08 No Control - I Know I'm Rushing (original mix)
09 Terra Incognita - Phalanx
10 Tek 9 - Just a dream : Part 2 (Manix Remix)
11 Kaotic Kemistry - LSD
12 Andy C - Outer Limits

Side B

01 Lemon D - Kinetic State
02 Hypno-Genesis - Take Control (Jungled Up To F**k Mix)
03 TrueBlood - Roots & Culture
04 Waxdoctor - New Direction
05 Metalheadz - Sinistery
06 3 Thieves & A Liar
07 The Moog - Jungle Muffin (Mickey Finn Remix)
08 Force Mass Motion - Collision Course
09 Bad Influence - Sudden Impact 10 3 Rude Bwoy - Rude Bwoy Rambo (Roast Gun Mix)

Unfortunately I was not listening to this music around that time. To me now it sounds like nothing else, fresh and fantastic. I think the reason I like this is that it has jungle beats, but also lots of synth sounds that are almost like happy house from that time. Unfortunately, this cassette is not as good quality of a recording as some other posts on this blog.

I especially love the synths on side 2 at the beginning and at 19:42 mark.

I think this is Dj Randall's myspace page.

I plan to rip out some of the clips from this mix that I think stand out. Here's the first track from side 2.

I knew there was a reason I subscribed to yur RSS feed. This is excellent stuff man. Whats the name of the track (at 15:40) with the Battlestar Galactica sounds in it?

thanks for this, looking forward to listening to it. if you want more rave try Origin FM on a sunday morning. It's 95.2fm and the signal's pretty good round Dalston.

Randall's been around for ages, but I'm more familiar with Randall as a jungle dj and occasional producer. He has a discog here

I find myself still very confused as to what the Klaxons, nu//neo//new rave et al actually have to do with rave music...

Great stuff as always, like Chris I'm more familiar with Randall as a D&B DJ but this completely kills. Looking forward to hearing some more of these tapes.

Listening to this it is *definitely* 1992, not 1991.

Randall is possibly my all-time favourite DJ - the mixtapes I have of his are all amazing, especially the two Yaman tapes (a series of consistently amazing mixtapes that used to be sold outside Brixton tube station, including some by LTJ Bukem, Randall, Mickey Finn) I have, which were the first tapes that really got me into hardcore/jungle back in the day. He used to be resident at the mighty AWOL, and has been a *big* Jungle/D'n'B DJ on the scene for years.

The track that Randall keeps fading in and out from about 6.54 on Side 1 (moody sounding chords and "so sinister" and "rufige" vocal), which he eventually drops properly at 9.16 is "Sinister" by Metalheads (Goldie) - from the classic Terminator EP.
Funnily enough, I just posted a bunch of Rufige Cru tunes over at dilated choonz just the other day - amazing these musical synchronicities that happen!

I started on a tracklisting and got a few, but have since worked out that it is another Yaman mix (which I haven't heard before) and turned to the interweb for assistance.

The (almost) full tracklisting (courtesy of Hardcore - U Know The Score - look down the page for "Randall - Yaman Studio Mix 2 [RAN02]") is as follows:

With reference to Chris's comment - I am also at a loss to see what the Klaxons have to do with rave. As far as I can tell they are a shit band who play guitars: What on Earth is "rave" about that - nu or otherwise?

Sorry... I'm not comment spamming, honest :o)

The other station to listen out for is Kool FM (94.6 FM) - it's mostly drum'n'bass in the week, but during the day on Super Sundays (which is *every* Sunday!) it's all oldschool.

If you can't get reception you can stream it over the web:

(you have to sign up to get access to the stream)

You know, in Holland we wouldn't classify this as Rave. We used to call it breakbeats.

I think "rave music" is really just whatever music you might hear at a rave... and if you went to raves in the UK in 1992 you would hear music like this (if you were lucky!). We used to call it either Hardcore or Jungle back then. That there would be breakbeats was just assumed :o)

The point is, if I turned up to a "Nu Rave" (is there such a type of event? Where do they happen?) and heard the Klaxons I'd turn round, go back home and put on a Jungle tape instead.

welllll . . . dearest double K. You gotta let the kids do what they like. I think the Klaxons sound great. The fact that you prefer Dj Randall/jungle may or may not be a reflection of your superior command of time and age :)

Don't worry I know I'm just a Miserable Old Bastard at heart.

I just like to grumble sometimes ;o)

Swear that looks like my hand writing on the tape...
